2. REGULAR SEED / Seed Germination

Pre – Germination Process.

REGULAR SEED.

  • CLARIFICATION: The only seed we currently sell, and has to undergo this process, is Passion Red.

The process of germinating the seed before sowing is known as “pregerminated.” Using this method represents an optimal use of the seed, since only one is placed per container, which in turn allows a saving of time, material and financial resources, stimulates and increases the germination percentage and the vigor of the seedlings .

The process consists of submerging the seed in water and placing an oxygenator pump, so that the water is oxygenating along with the seed.

This method combines the advantages of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and gibberellic acid (AG3) since there is a synergism between both compounds that stimulate the germination, vigor and uniformity of the seedling in the nursery.

The method consists of 6 simple steps:

1.- The seed is hydroaconditioned in clean water with the oxygenator pump for 24 hours, at the rate of a seed envelope in a liter of water, changing it every 6 or 8 hours.

2.- After this time, the oxygenator pump is turned off and the seed that continues to float passes another container to continue soaking, if on the third day this seed does not sink, it is eliminated; if it has already sunk it goes to the next stage of pregerminate.

3.- All the seed that does not float, will be poured into another container because of a seed envelope in a liter of water, adding the following products:

¾ of effervescent aspirin or 2g of potassium nitrate

0.25 grams of 10% gibberellic acid

1g of Mancozeb 80%

The seed will remain submerged in this solution for 48 hours changing every 12 hours, in the same way the oxygenator pump will be used in this step.

4.- Once this period is over, the seed is washed with clean water for 5 minutes.

5.- The seed is laid on a flannel or piece of thick and colorless cloth, previously disinfected, and another one is placed on top so that it is covered.

6.- The flannels that contain the seed are placed in half shade or under a mesh with 50-80% of light, watering every 6-8 hours depending on the climatic conditions, special care must be taken that the flannels are always wet. With temperatures below 22º C there is a risk that the seed will go to sleep inhibiting germination.

In these cases, to maintain a constant germination temperature it is recommended to place a bulb or bulb of 40 watts on at 20 cm from the flannels.

The seed will take 8 to 12 days to sprout depending on the temperature, being the optimum between 35 and 38 ° C, once it has sprouted it is necessary that the seed be sown in the container at 1 cm deep and with a radicle of 1 mm maximum length.
